History
Gary Erickson is the founder and CEO of Clif Bar. He co-founded Kali Bakery in Emeryville, California which sold calzones and gourmet cookies. He developed Clif Bar as an alternative to other energy bars on the market which did not match his taste. In 1992, Kali introduced the first Clif Bars in the bakery; in 1997, Kali’s Bakery changed its name to Clif Bar Inc., naming it after Gary’s father, Clifford. In March 1999, Clif Bar introduced Luna Bars, which were specifically marketed towards women. Luna bars outpaced the sales of Clif Bars and quickly became the company’s top product. Later in 1999, Inc. Magazine selected the company as one of the twenty best small businesses web sites in the country. In 2000, Inc. Magazine named Clif Bar Inc. one of the country’s fastest-growing private companies for the fourth straight year in a row. In April 2000, Erickson turned down a $120 million offer to buy his company.[citation needed] Gary Erickson and his wife Kit Crawford currently run the company as co-owners.
Clif Bar recalled on Jan 19, 2009, many products which may contain salmonella-tainted peanut butter. The press release notes: “Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to destroy them but retain the est By/Sell By code found on the back of the package. Consumers with questions or who would like a refund may contact Clif Bar & Company at 1-510-558-7855.”
